Department of Telecommunications (DoT) asks all mobile operators in India to collect ‘Aadhaar’ number from new subscribers along with the CAF (Customer Application Form) for issuing new SIMs. DoT also directed mobile operators to make the necessary changes to store the UIN (Unique Identification Number) of subscribers in their database. Time line of two months has been given to mobile operators to make the necessary technical changes for adding ‘Aadhaar’ number option in their database.
As per the directive, Aadhaar number will be mandatory apart from the ID proof / Address proof customers submits while taking a new mobile connection.
Couple of weeks ago Department of Electronics and IT (DeitY) Secretary R. S. Sharma said “The issue regarding use of Aadhaar card as proof of address for procuring new SIM cards in its proposed online verification will be in place in next two months”.
DoT proposed a new concept to use ‘Aadhaar’ number for online verification of customers seeking new mobile connections along with existing process of customer verification by mobile operators.
Home Ministry raised concerns over the ‘Aadhaar’ card misuse by nationals of neighbouring countries as ‘Aadhaar’ card can also be issued to foreign nationals staying in India. Matter of concern is, foreign nationals could attempt to use ‘Aadhaar’ to procure Indian identity documents for infiltration purpose. As foreign vendors are involved by UIDAI for storing data purposes, the Home Ministry therefore suggested audit of data security.
